Tip A Porter

The idea of Tip A Porter campaign grew over time as we kept in touch with our local climbing team in Tanzania during the Covid-19 pandemic. We were due to be leading Australian Team “Light Odyssey” to Mt. Kilimanjaro in August 2020, but everything has been put on hold as the world tried to navigate through the Covid crisis.

We began hearing stories and learning of the difficulty these guys where having as the tourism industry was predominately shut down with no other job opportunities available.

For us, this looked like a chance to try and encourage others who were planning to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2020 to pay forward their tips and help the porters.

We setup the campaign to raise money and purchase basic supplies for the crews and their families.

Virtual Kilimanjaro Marathon​

On his 40th birthday, Shane set out to virtually climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Armed with his trusty treadmill, plenty of supplies and a crowd to cheer – he started what would become a 14hr suffer-fest.

Along the way, he shared the journey with a series of live streams with inspiring adventurers and friends.

Live Kilimanjaro Experience

The Tip a Porter campaign ended on a high with a real-life Kilimanjaro experience. Guests were greeted at the door with canapés of Trail Mix, dehydrated hiking meals for dinner and hydrolites instead of wine.

Films, tent and a real life Kilimanjaro kit on display set the backdrop for an uphill water carry. Setting the treadmill at it’s maximum 18% incline and loading up our guests with a lighter than normal load of 10kg, this experience very quickly highlighted the strength and endurance the porters of Kilimanjaro really are.
